In This Guide
Newborns have tiny stomachs and need frequent feeds. Expect to feed every 2-3 hours for breastfed babies, or every 3-4 hours for formula-fed babies. Watch for hunger cues: rooting, hand-to-mouth, fussing before crying.
- Day 1: Stomach is marble-sized (~5-7ml). Colostrum is enough!
- Week 1: Stomach grows to walnut-size (~30-60ml per feed)
- Month 1: Stomach is egg-sized (~80-150ml per feed)
- Feed on demand—clock-watching can lead to underfeeding
- Cluster feeding (very frequent feeds, especially evenings) is normal
- Expect 6+ wet diapers and 3+ stools daily by day 5
- Baby should regain birth weight by 2 weeks
Breastfeeding is natural but not always easy at first. Most challenges can be overcome with proper support and technique.
- A good latch covers both nipple AND areola
- Baby's lips should be flanged outward like fish lips
- Pain beyond 30 seconds of initial latch needs assessment
- Switch breasts each feeding; start with the fuller breast
- Pumping after feeds can increase supply
- Stay hydrated—drink to thirst, no need to force fluids
- Seek lactation support early if struggling—it gets easier!
- Nipple confusion is rare; bottles are fine when needed
