Baby-proof BEFORE your baby is mobile—they gain skills quickly. Get on your hands and knees to see hazards from their perspective.

  • Cover all electrical outlets with safety plugs
  • Secure furniture (bookshelves, TVs, dressers) to walls
  • Install safety gates at top and bottom of stairs
  • Lock cabinets with cleaning supplies, medications, sharp objects
  • Keep small objects (coins, batteries, magnets) out of reach
  • Use doorknob covers on rooms that should be off-limits
  • Install window guards or stops (windows shouldn't open more than 4 inches)
  • Cover sharp corners on furniture
  • Keep blind cords out of reach or use cordless blinds

Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children. Proper car seat use reduces fatality risk by 71-82%.

  • Rear-facing until at least age 2, ideally until outgrowing seat limits
  • Harness straps should be at or below shoulders (rear-facing)
  • Chest clip should be at armpit level
  • One finger should fit under the harness at collarbone
  • No puffy coats in car seats—strap, then cover with blanket
  • Middle back seat is safest position when possible
  • Get car seat installation checked by certified technician
  • Replace car seat after any crash (even minor ones)
  • Never leave child alone in car, even for a minute
