Baby-proof BEFORE your baby is mobile—they gain skills quickly. Get on your hands and knees to see hazards from their perspective.
- Cover all electrical outlets with safety plugs
- Secure furniture (bookshelves, TVs, dressers) to walls
- Install safety gates at top and bottom of stairs
- Lock cabinets with cleaning supplies, medications, sharp objects
- Keep small objects (coins, batteries, magnets) out of reach
- Use doorknob covers on rooms that should be off-limits
- Install window guards or stops (windows shouldn't open more than 4 inches)
- Cover sharp corners on furniture
- Keep blind cords out of reach or use cordless blinds
Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children. Proper car seat use reduces fatality risk by 71-82%.
- Rear-facing until at least age 2, ideally until outgrowing seat limits
- Harness straps should be at or below shoulders (rear-facing)
- Chest clip should be at armpit level
- One finger should fit under the harness at collarbone
- No puffy coats in car seats—strap, then cover with blanket
- Middle back seat is safest position when possible
- Get car seat installation checked by certified technician
- Replace car seat after any crash (even minor ones)
- Never leave child alone in car, even for a minute
