Safe sleep is non-negotiable. Follow the ABCs: Alone, on their Back, in a bare Crib.
- Always place baby on their BACK to sleep—for every sleep
- Use a firm, flat surface (crib, bassinet, play yard)
- NO soft bedding, pillows, blankets, bumpers, or toys
- Room-sharing (not bed-sharing) recommended for first 6-12 months
- Keep room at comfortable temperature (68-72°F)
- Dress baby in one more layer than you're wearing
- Swaddling is safe until baby shows signs of rolling
- Never sleep with baby on couch, armchair, or soft surface
Newborns sleep 16-17 hours per day but only 2-4 hours at a stretch. They don't have circadian rhythms yet—day/night confusion is normal.
- Sleep cycles are short (20-50 minutes vs 90+ for adults)
- REM sleep is higher—expect twitching, noises, eye movement
- Day/night confusion resolves around 6-8 weeks
- Expose to natural light during day, keep nights dark and quiet
- You cannot spoil a newborn—respond to their needs
- Swaddling helps most newborns sleep better
- White noise mimics womb sounds and aids sleep
- Wake windows are short: 45-90 minutes max before overtired
